Alan Mayo – BVSc CertSAS MRCVS

Alan qualified from Liverpool in 1993 with Alan Banks. Following posts at the Royal Veterinary College and in private practice he joined Nantwich in 1996 and passed his surgery exams in 1997. He has played a pivotal role in the development of the Veterinary Hospital and our whole practice as it is today.

As the senior surgeon, Alan sees cases with a vast range of conditions, including second opinions and referrals from other practices. His patients have problems which can be classified into three categories*:

Orthopaedic problems – such as fracture fixation, cruciate ligament rupture and elbow dysplasia. He has treated over 5000 fractures, 3000 cranial cruciate and 2000 patella luxation patients alone.

Spinal conditions – including disc protrusion and extrusion, instability, malformations, fractures and tumours. Alan has personally and successfully performed spinal surgery on over 2000 patients.

Soft tissue surgery – particularly airway problems, trauma cases and tumour removal, where he employs a pragmatic approach tailored to the needs of the patient. Alan is one of the few UK trained surgeons experienced in all upper airway surgical procedures.

*see the Surgery section on this site for more information

Current research interests include minimally invasive fracture repair, advanced techniques in lumbosacral disc disease and optimising procedure selection in cranial cruciate ligament disease.

Outside of work he spends time with his young family, sleeping and avidly supports the current (at the time of writing) World, European and English football champions.

“I have devoted my career to practical excellence in veterinary surgical treatment. I passionately believe that patients should be able to access first class treatment without needing to have ‘every test’ done or costing the earth. I will give straightforward and honest advice based upon a lifetime of experience in treating surgical conditions. Working as a surgeon is not just about performing operations but more importantly making the best decisions, and if I do not believe that surgical treatment is the right option for a patient I will say so.”
