As a busy equine practice with a diverse caseload, blood samples are very often required to be taken. The reasons for this can vary from a screening tool in situations of non-specific symptoms or as part of more advanced medical work ups. Importantly, we are able to offer a same day service in many cases for routine blood samples where results are interpreted and reported by the case vet in the afternoon.
Blood samples once taken are processed at a specialist veterinary laboratory specialising in clinical pathology (haematology, biochemistry, serology and endocrinology) and microbiology and also provides other services including cytopathology and histopathology.
In addition to this we also offer in house cytology (interpretation of cell types and numbers) on respiratory samples to complete the work up of poor performance or airway disease where appropriate samples have been taken.
Faecal worm egg counts (WEC) are also performed in house catering for those on strategic worming programmes or just for those wanting to know if their horse has a parasite burden. These are performed by qualified veterinary surgeons with an in depth knowledge of equine parasitology who then report the results personally along with advice on future worming and management of your horse.
For more information or to speak to one of our vets regarding the diagnostic lab or faecal samples please feel free to contact us.
