Colin Baxter - BVM&S MRCVS
Colin qualified in July 1979 from The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Edinburgh University. Having an interest in veterinary medicine from a very early age, he was able to put this into practice by working on farms during school holidays and then working for the CWS before going to vet college.
He had the pleasure of his father, the late Professor J T Baxter, being one of his lecturers at Edinburgh as he was professor of veterinary medicine. “Seeing Practice” as a student Colin saw diverse veterinary work in Edinburgh, Devon, Leicester, Argyll, Kelso, Perth and then Nantwich. At that time, Cheshire was still clearing up brucellosis so blood testing was a regular occurrence. He was invited to join the practice on graduating and has been at Nantwich since then and as a partner since 1985.
Colin’s daily work covers many regular routine farm visits, dealing with dairy herd fertility and general health. Keen to promote the farmers interests and to assist with maximising herd fertility and production, Colin is happy to discuss the individual farmers’ needs in the changing arena of dairy farming. Other interests have been related to Cheshire life in a broader context and he continues to lecture regularly at Reaseheath College, works with a voluntary group at Chester Zoo monthly, and is immediate Past President of the British Veterinary Dental Association.
He has been a main tutor for the BVNA certificate in dentistry for veterinary nurses, and has tutored at Liverpool Veterinary College . He has published veterinary papers in several journals and is a co-author of one of the BSAVA Manuals. The Nantwich Veterinary Hospital building owes much to his input and he is instrumental to much of the building work in the premises we use.
